The Garden and the Gun takes the reader into the heart of today's Israel. Blending interviews, observations, and popular history, Paris imparts the flavour of this ancient land and people. At the same time she examines how the past has shaped present conflicts. Paris talks to descendants of the original Zionist settlers and to Jewish-American hippies who founded an "ideal" kibbutz based on their sixties values; to the religiously liberal and the ultra-Orthodox; to the politically moderates and the hardliners, both Arab and Israeli. Her tense encounters with Palestinians within Israel and in the Occupied Territories lead her to confront her own responses to the Arab-Israeli conflict and to provide the reader with an honest and illuminating perspective on this troubled land.
