Erna Paris offers insight as a writer and reader at this open to the public keynote address for the Creative Non-Fiction Collective Annual General Meeting. Paris, national chair of the Writers Union of Canada, began her writing career as a magazine journalist, book reviewer, and radio documentary broadcaster before turning to writing books of literary non-fiction. Erna Paris will discuss her latest publication, The Sun Climbs Slow: The International Criminal Court and the Struggle for Justice, which explores the history of global justice, the politics behind America's opposition to the creation of a permanent international criminal court, and the implications for the world at large. In this work, Ms. Paris grapples with an emerging dilemma of the twenty-first century: the tension between unchallenged political power and the rule of international law. Books will be available for purchase.

What justice is possible after persecution and genocide? After the Holocaust redress took a variety of forms: war crime trials, apologies and reparations to survivors. In Canada, the persecution of First Nations has resulted in apologies, reparations to survivors and the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission about to begin national deliberations.

This session will explore the challenges involved in facing historical evils.
